Living God's Way at Home

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Series: Living God's Way Scripture: 1 Peter 3:1–7

Living God’s Way:

Living God’s Way At Home:

1 Peter 3:1-7:

A family will never be what God has called it to be apart from the individual members being what God has called them to be!

Important Biblical Principle: Begin With Yourself!

Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.” (Matthew 7:1–5)

What Is It Like Being Married To Me?

A Necessary Foundation

submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (Ephesians 5:21)

Every obedient, spirit-filled Christian is a submitting Christian!

Submit – originally a military term meaning to Arrange or rank under

It has nothing to do with inferiority/superiority.  It has to do with order and function among equals.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:28)

Every obedient, spirit-filled Christian is a submitting Christian!

Headship is the divine calling of a husband to take primary responsibility for Christ-like, servant leadership, protection and provision in the home.

Submission is the divine calling of a wife to honor and affirm her husband’s leadership and help carry it through according to her gifts.

What Submission Does Not Mean

  1. Agreeing with everything your husband says or does.
  1. Leaving your brain or your will at the wedding altar
  1. Avoiding every effort to guide or influence your husband
  1. Putting the will of the husband before the will of Christ
  1. That a wife Acts out of fear (6)
  1. That a wife is Less intelligent or competent
  1. Inequality in Christ

What Does That Look Like For The Wife?

  • Behavior (2)
  • Appearance (3)
  • Attitude (4)

Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” (Proverbs 31:25)

  • Response (5)

“A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies.” (Proverbs 31:10)

What Does That Look Like For The Husband?

The Key Word For Husbands: Sacrifice

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her,” (Ephesians 5:25)

  • Live with your wife

Refuse to be passive when it comes to your home!

Be present in your home!

  • Know your wife

Knowing and meeting the unique needs of your wife

  • Honor your wife

To honor someone is to ascribe value to them

What would make your wife feel honored?

Is this kind of marriage easy?  No Way!  That’s why we must be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18).

A family will never be what God has called it to be apart from the individual members being what God has called them to be!

Making It Personal

For The Married:

  • How am I currently living out these principles in my marriage?
  • Where do I see the need for growth in being who God has called me to be in our marriage relationship?
  • Set up a time and place with your spouse to discuss the question: “What is it like being married to me?” Really listen to what they have to say.

For Singles:

  • What does it look like for you to live out mutual submission in the relationships of your life right now?
  • How can you live out loving sacrifice in the various relationships of your life?
  • Who can I share these truths with?
