Guided by God's Voice

Pastor: Jeff Bedwell Series: Discerning God's Voice in a World Full of Noise Scripture: James 1:5–1:6

Guided by God’s Voice
James 1:5-6

God wants to guide us in the decision of our lives, but we have to be tuned in to God in order to receive His help.

A Few Prerequisites

1. Realize that God cares about the details of my life.

“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

2. Ask God to guide me

“Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies.” (Psalm 27:11)

3. Believe God wants to answer

Receiving God’s Guidance

1. Withdraw

“But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.” (Luke 5:16)

2. Wait

“O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.” (Psalm 5:3)

“Be still, and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10)

Inner calm opens the intercom to God so that you can hear Him!

3. Watch

“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” (Matthew 26:41)

  • The Bible

“Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.” (Psalm 119:18)

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)

  • Around

“But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working... Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.” (John 5:17, 19–20)

  • Within

“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139:23–24)

“For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” (Philippians 2:13)

4. Write

“Take a scroll and write on it all the words that I have spoken to you against Israel and Judah and all the nations, from the day I spoke to you, from the days of Josiah until today.” (Jeremiah 36:2)

“And the LORD answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.” (Habakkuk 2:2)

“If a man write little, he need not have a great memory” Francis Bacon

5. Worship

“Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!” (Psalm 95:6)

“Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness; tremble before him, all the earth!” (Psalm 96:9)

Promises and a Prayer

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)

“And the LORD will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” (Isaiah 58:11)

“Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” (John 16:13)

“Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes; and I will keep it to the end. Give me understanding, that I may keep your law and observe it with my whole heart. Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.” (Psalm 119:33–35)
